Last Friday, after five eventful competition days, the WUBC reached its climax in the finals and the subsequent Closing Ceremony. Against the backdrop of the crowded Center Court in Munich's Olympic Park, first the Canadians Megan and Nicole McNamarra won the world championship title, in the following men's final the German duo Eric Stadie and Dan John triumphed.

Tense final games

In the match for third place, the Americans Emily Sonny and Torrey Van Winden won the bronze medal against the Swiss team Zoé Vergé-Dépré and Esmée Böbner (21:19, 21:16). In the men's tournament, the Swiss Florian Breer and Yves Haussener beat the Austrians Felix Friedl and Maximilian Trummer (19:21, 19:21, 9:15).

The final match between the two German men's teams was eagerly awaited. Eric Stadie and Dan John won the title against the twin brothers Bennet and David Poniewaz (21:17, 21:19). In the women's competition, Megan and Nicole McNamarra triumphed. The Canadian twin sisters defeated the Spanish team Belén Carro and Paula Soria (21:14, 21:18, 15:10).

"The WUBC in Munich was a perfectly organised tournament. It was so much fun to play in the Olympic Park in front of this amazing audience. From the sporting point of view we learned a lot. The fact that we were able to win the gold medal is just great," Eric Stadie sums up the tournament.

High-ranking national and international guests visit the WUBC

Numerous prominent guests from sport and politics attended the WUBC. Among them were the first FISU Vice-President Leonz Eder and FISU Vice-President Luciano Cabral, the Technical Delegate of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), Dirk Decher, and the President of the organizing committee, Dr. Verena Burk. Together with Stephan Mayer, Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Prof. Dr. Gerhard Müller, Vice President of the Technical University of Munich (TUM), TUM-Chancellor Albert Berger and Beatrix Zurek, Head of the Education and Sports Department of the City of Munich, they enjoyed the final matches in bright sunshine on Friday afternoon.

Festive closing ceremony

After the award ceremony it was time to say goodbye. FISU Vice-President Cabral thanked the numerous volunteers. "You were fantastic: Always friendly, always had a smile on your face and enormous competence," says Cabral. He addressed the active participants: "Today you are stars - tomorrow you will be leaders". Dr. Verena Burk, President of the Organising Committee, followed on from this. " We enjoyed several sport highlights during this week ending in two fascinating finals – Beach volleyball at its best! And therefore this World University Championship is a real good example of the quality of student elite sport. I hope that the active members and officials of the WUBC can take away not only competition experience but also the positive feeling of hospitality and friendship. We want to strengthen the exchange between nations with sport. We succeeded in doing this here in Munich together with our partners," says Burk.

After the final speeches, the FISU flag was withdrawn and handed over to the organiser of the World University Beach Volleyball Championships 2020, Málaga.
